How to Stop Your PC Going to Sleep During Long Tasks

Windows already lets you stop the screen sleeping — the problem is that you have to change a permanent setting and then remember to change it back. Here is how to do it properly, and when a timer is the better answer.

The short answer

Windows can do this on its own. Open Settings, go to System, then Power and battery, and set the sleep timer to Never.

Screen off and sleep are not the same. Turning the screen off costs you nothing and stops nothing. Sleep is what interrupts work. If all you want is to stop the display switching off during a presentation, change only the first.

And if your machine still sleeps after you have set everything to Never, the setting is usually being overridden — by a company policy on a work laptop, by the manufacturer's own power software, or by the lid-close action, which is separate and lives further down the same page.
